The ability to sit and lie down on furniture was introduced into the game on May 8, 2009, on the game's first year anniversary. In order for the feature to function, hundreds of already-released items at the time had to be updated to accommodate the new feature, a process the developers of the time described as very tedious.
With the feature, all avatars gained the ability to sit on couches and chairs, lay on beds and lunges, and even sit on toilets (which blurs out the avatars lower body).
Zynga developer Kyle Stewart mentioned that the process took a few months to complete. Various items, including costumes, broke for a short period of time because they weren't originally designed for sitting.
